A popular known remedy for yeast infections is yogurt. It can help reduce the itching and burning symptoms, and keep yeast infections away if eaten regularly. Knowing how this yeast infection treatment works, and what to be careful of is important to ensure you get maximum effectiveness. This article is going to explore yogurt as a yeast infection treatment, and guide you through the proper use.

Why Yogurt is so great at Treating Yeast Infections

Yeast infections occur when there is an over population of Candida bacteria in the vaginal canal. Under normal circumstances many different types of bacteria exist together, but some changes to the body such as antibiotics or diet can cause Candida to grow out of control. The good bacteria in plain yogurt known as L. acidophilus work to bring the levels of Candida back in check. Eating a serving of yogurt that contains L. acidophilus daily can ensure you keep a healthy balance. Look for yogurts that state they have L. acidophilus in them or live cultures.

Eating Yogurt

A serving of approximately 8 ounces each day is enough to keep the healthy bacteria levels in balance. Be sure it's plain yogurt as mentioned above. If you eat yogurt with added sugar, or flavored you can be doing more harm as sugar is what yeast thrives on. If you're not a fan of eating yogurt there are other ways to get the healthy bacteria. Check the natural food section of your grocery store for yogurt capsules or L. acidophilus capsules. You can take these twice daily to get the healthy bacteria you need.

Inserting Yogurt for Symptom Relief

Eating plain yogurt is the key to keeping yeast infections away, or stopping symptoms before they become to advanced. How ever if you have a full blown infection eating a serving of yogurt each day probably isn't going to clear it up. Inserting plain yogurt directly has been proven to give relief from bacterial vaginosis, which is a similar infection but different bacteria. Be sure if you are going to use yogurt to insert into the vagina that it is plain without sugar.
