The revival of Les Misérables, albeit for a special limited six-month period, previewed on October 21, 2006 and opened on November 9, 2006 at the Broadhurst Theater. This great musical has had a long innings of 16 years on Broadway earlier, and has returned after three and a half years, to a warm welcome.

This legendary musical made its debut on a Broadway stage on March 12, 1987 at the Broadway Theater. It was nominated for twelve Tony Awards in 1987, and won eight of them for: Best Musical, Best Featured Actor, Best Featured Actress, Director of a Musical, Book of a Musical, Score, Scenic Design, and Lighting Design. On October 17, 1990, it moved from the 1,752 seat Broadway Theater to the smaller 1,412 seat Imperial Theater.

On January 25, 2002, with its 6,138th performance, Les Misérables became the 2nd longest running show in the history of Broadway, and had its final performance, the 6,680th show, on May 18, 2003. Even after its revival after three and a half years, it is still the 2nd longest running show on Broadway - after The Phantom of the Opera.

The Musical

An epic novel by Victor Hugo - a great author who needs no introduction - Les Misérables is the story of the turbulent days of the French Revolution. The musical, adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird, has music by Claude-Michel Schonberg.

The story that is spread across decades, is about a policeman - Javert, who is pursuing an escaped criminal - Jean Valjean. Under an alias - Monsieur Madeleine, Valjean becomes the Mayor. Javert suspects that the Mayor is actually Valjean, when Valjean promises to bring up Cosette - the daughter of a dying prostitute - Fantine. Javert, however, is unable to pin him down. During the chaos of the revolution, Javert is exposed as a police spy. Javert's mind towards Valjean changes, when Valjean, on being given a chance to kill him, refuses.

Les Misérables has been seen by more than 53 million people worldwide, in 38 countries and in 21 different languages, since its opening in London in October 1985. This is a great story, and if you have missed it earlier, by any chance, the revival shows are now an opportunity you should not let go.
