The efficient usage of storage can make an amazing difference to the amount of space available in your home. There are heaps of ways to reduce the muddle in your home with easy to implement storage ideas.

The design of your home will influence how you organize your storage. Modern homes tend to already have high-quality storage options like built in wardrobes, walk in closets and built-in shelving, but these are often fairly rudimentary and can easily be approved upon.

Every home is different, and each has its own storage issues however the basic storage principles will apply to every home. And by focusing on these we can bring about some organization to your storage.

The first principle is something we can all do. And definitely something we need to do and keep doing on a regular basis. That is to get rid of all that unnecessary "stuff".

You will be amazed at how much extra space you have if you have a ruthless 'throw out' session. One persons junk is another's treasure so sell it on ebay or have a garage sale. Clearing out unnecessary items may be difficult for you, but I guarantee you will feel better after you have and have so much more storage room.

Another area to note is that scores of houses have cupboards and the like that were not specifically designed for the room. Buy a cheap cupboard, stuff it full and shut the door quick, then pile things on top - sound familiar? But this is not making the best use of the space - all the area to the ceiling is wasted. Consider building (or having built) your own shelves and designing it with thought of what you want to store in it.

Go now and take a look inside your clothes closet. It is likely to have a lot of wasted space. Most wardrobes have just one high rail for hanging, this is great for dresses and trousers but wastes space with all those shorter items like shirts. Installing a second rail under the first might just give you the extra hanging space you need.

Are there other spots in your closet where there is empty space? It's easy to install a few shelves here and there; and it will make all the difference.

We often neglect the backs of doors as a storage space. The previous owner of our home put hooks on the backs of the bed room doors and these are so handy. A small shelf might also be worth considering.

Use these simple suggestions and you will soon have your storage issues under control. Taking the time to design a few well placed shelves can make a big difference. Now go clean out that closet - remember be ruthless.
