Although the Outer Banks are a wildly distinct destination that are known for many things, one of the most off putting may be the maddening crowds that flock here in the summer. If you still crave a fair amount of sanity and serenity but cannot let a single summer can pass by without a journey to this spectacular strip of history and adventure, then Duck, North Carolina may just be the right place for you.

To say that Duck is a safe haven from other vacationers would be an overstatement since you definitely are not going to find a town that has yet to be conquered by the masses. However, its distinct appeal lies in what it does not have since this drives the hoards further south in search of more noteworthy attractions. While nearby Nags Head swoons visitors as the home of Jockey's Ridge State Park and Cape Hatteras boasts the tallest lighthouse on the East Coast, Duck remains a largely residential community where you can relax and kick back along the seashore.

Even though Duck has changed as much as any other Outer Banks destination over the past 20 years, you can still find miles of pristine, sparkling sand and countless water-based activities off of Duck Beach. The fine sand, which seems to stretch on forever, invites guests to throw down a towel and soak up the warm North Carolina sun. If you happen to get a bit too warm, the refreshing waters of the Atlantic are at your beck and call to offer you swimming, boogie boarding, and body surfing. Simply stretching your legs can also become an adventure in itself since the Outer Banks offer excellent shelling on the oceanfront.

While you certainly expect to pursue a variety of activities in and around the water, there are two that cannot be missed due to their superior quality in the Outer Banks. What allured the Wright brothers back in the early 1900s and which now attract recreational enthusiasts, the constant winds that sweep over the Outer Banks create the perfect conditions for windsurfing and sailboarding. Whether you are a beginner just trying to get your feet wet or an expert tackling Canadian Hole on Hatteras Island, this is one activity that you absolutely must attempt from early spring until late fall.

Beyond windsurfing, the other activity that you should try at least once during your Duck getaway is fishing. The Outer Banks are known as one of the top fishing spots in the world since the Gulf Stream, which is teeming with marlin, sailfish, and tuna, lies only 12 miles offshore. Even if you don't come back with a trophy catch, the experience is always memorable and exciting for vacationers of all ages. While fishing can occupy a day of your vacation, there are also a variety of nearby outlets where you can rent jet skis, boats, and kayaks for even more water-filled adventures.

If you tire of the beach or simply need a change of pace for a couple of days, you can take advantage of Duck's proximity to a variety of worthwhile sights. A drive along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which stretches down the islands and leads visitors past quaint villages, along flawless beaches, and through a wildlife refuge, is the best way to catch a glimpse of all the wonderful scenery as you make your way down to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse,. The sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge State Park, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla, and the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills are other excellent attractions you might want to visit during your vacation.

The next time you want to getaway from it all and experience the Outer Banks outside the typical tourist locations, let Duck guide you on your adventures. Away from the crowds, tucked into your own little piece of paradise, you can enjoy the stunning seashore and easy access to all of your favorite recreational pursuits in a Duck North Carolina vacation rental. Located directly on the sands of Duck Beach and offering all of the amenities and comforts of home, Duck NC vacation rentals make it easy to experience a more relaxing Outer Banks getaway than you ever thought possible.
