Judge Approved Name Change

She lost her fiance in a hail of police gunfire on their wedding day, but a court has ruled that Nicole Paultre can still have his name. A civil court judge approved an application to legally change her name to Nicole Paultre Bell, in memory of the victim of the Nov. 25 shooting, Sean Bell, her lawyer said Friday.

That is good, I mean, it's good for the children to have a mother who has the same surname as they have. It will be difficult enough to explain to them what has happened to their father and why it did happen.

The same article went on saying that the 5 police officers, who shot 50 rounds at Sean Bell on the night before his wedding, are on paid leave, until the grand jury made a decision on wether they should be prosecuted yes or no.

Like many other people I've been following this story when it developed. I remember that one of the officers actually took the time to reload his gun. There are a number of questions to be asked here:

1. Why did Sean Bell bump with his car into a plain clothes police officer? Was he drunk, or was he very scared at that moment, and the only thing that he wanted to do was get away as soon as possible, and as a result, he crashed into a police car as well.

2. Why did police used so much fire power. It seems to me, as no weapons were found in the car, no one was shooting at the police. So, was the police under threat, and if yes, what kind of threat?

3. Why did police single out a group of black people?

In my work as an anchor woman, I present a daily news clip, giving people the most important headlines of the day, most important from my point of view that is. And I write on a daily basis about some of those headlines making news events, because I hope that my opinion will make a difference to someone, somewhere.

I think it's very important that society sends a very clear message to ALL law enforcement officials, no matter which agency they belong to, that it can NOT be excepted when innocent citizens, ok, granted, they might have been drunk, are first being stalked by police, and then shot 50 (fifty) times. Even in the most violent police dramas on TV, people are not being shot 50 times by police officers. That is simply not done.

As such my advice would be: prosecute these 5 officers to the maximum extend of the law. For each bullet fired they should get life imprisonment. Thus 50x life.

I do understand fully that American society is afraid of terrorism, and therefor keeps an eye on everyone who behaves differently. But we should not forget that acts as described in this article do account as state terrorism, specifically when there are no sanctions against the police officers who committed them. The American Government has no excuse whats so ever to engage, or to condone that it's officers behave in this manner. The war is fought overseas, in Iraq and Afghanistan. The streets of New York City should be safe.

But, as always, I don't care what you do, as long as you don't forget: Love a soldier.

Love,
