Study Abroad Program

Many major cities and education centres have schools and companies that offer a range of courses and programmes to help foreign students prepare to study abroad. Such facilities are sometimes affiliated with local or national universities but many are also offered by private companies that tailor their offerings to that end. To find out if there are such facilities and programmes in an area near you, consult universities and colleges in your vicinity or do an Internet search to find the private companies that offer what are often called "pre-masters" progammes (a useful term to use in your Internet search).

Typically, such programmes offer a range of courses, including, for example, research and study skills, academic English and writing, business English, maths, presentation skills, and preparation courses for entrance examinations such as TOEFL and IELTS. Usually, students have the opportunity to register for the full range of courses offered or to choose the particular courses they need and customise their own programmes.

Many of these facilities also provide individual assistance with all aspects of gaining admission to foreign universities. Many of the private companies, in particular, are agents for foreign universities and can make admission to them significantly simpler and more successful.

Also, because applicants of many kinds need and seek such programmes and services, they are usually available in a range of timetables and tutorial arrangements. Current university students and recent university graduates planning to do advanced study abroad usually are offered daytime courses. But weekend and night classes are also usually on offer for students who are either heavily committed to their final-year university courses or who are working at day jobs after completing their university educations. In some special cases, private instruction in specific areas can be arranged for study-abroad candidates with special scheduling problems or time constraints.

Most foreign students seeking to study at universities in English-speaking countries need assistance in some of the areas mentioned above, to make themselves competitive with the other students with whom they will be studying. Getting such assistance by trained professionals who know what the particular demands on foreign students studying abroad are can provide invaluable help in assuring that your study-abroad experience is as stress-free as possible and that you are in a position to get the most out of it.
