Countrywide Communications Via the GSM Network Using Intelligent Embedded Products

This article briefly mentions some of the amazing capabilities of the Wavecom range of GSM modems that have been on the market for a while but whose capabilities are growing with every revision. This functionality not only extends to the wireless section but it also has an embedded ARM7 or ARM9 core which can be programmed using the OPEN AT Operating System. I have recently been programming the Q24 series which are able to communicate over the cellphone GSM network with other similar devices using a number of different standards from the entry level SMS (short message service) to the more sophisticated GSM data stream (expensive as it opens a permanent data link which you pay for whether you use it or not) or the cost effective GPRS (General Packet Radio Service).

The latter only uses the GSM network when actual data is being sent. This allows the user who has lots of small data packets to send over a long period of time to use the network only for the time period that the actual data is being sent. Using these techniques the designer has the option of opening up a device to becoming either a Client or a Server. The Server then listens for Clients to call it and Clients initiate a call and transfer data when necessary.

Using these devices the developer has the means of creating systems that can be widely separated in space (all over the country) but can be connected quickly when data transfers have to take place. An additional bonus capability that these devices have is that even though they may have been installed at a customer site, the software can still be upgraded over the air if a software bug is found or if the customer needs additional functionality.
