Entanglements

Entanglements can be described as "activities" beyond normal work activities, normal church activities, and beyond normal home life. These are necessary activities. The time and effort for them is a must.

We can however gravitate, or by intent, become involved in so many other activities that our time is lost to those activities, and our focus diverted.

I asked a millionaire I know "Let's buy some apartment complexes" to which he replied, "Go to it." He was not being funny, but was serious. He would like owning some apartment complexes, but he was focused on his chain of restaurants, and he would not be deterred from it. He was saying you can use my name, that he would partner loans and have his names on deeds, but I would do the effort of acquiring the property, and managing them. He would keep entanglements outside his primary interest to a minimum, or delete them.

Time is the key, and how we use it.

There are 168 hours in a week each of us has to use. Yet some basics must be subtracted. Sleep takes 56 hours. Eating good food takes say 2-hours a day, or 14-hours a week. If you work a job for another then 40-hours is subtracted. And suddenly we are left with 58 hours. Yet it is amazing what can be done with those 58 hours, especially when they are focused hours.

If, instead of being an employee, one owns a brick and mortar small retail business then at least 54 hours are consumed operating that store. More time will likely be necessary to perform "bookkeeping" at home.

What about an Internet business ? Is time gained ? A little maybe. For it requires the same kind of attention and effort if it is to succeed. In other words do not believe the hype. Until an Internet business or a brick and mortar store becomes very successful, hours of time and effort are required each day.

A good thing about an Internet business is that time can be devoted to it after working a job each day. That would make for long hours, but it can be done.

So what entanglements can we rid ourselves of ? Each person may differ in what they are involved in, so selection is up to each person. Nevertheless let's look at a few.

Do you play golf more than once a week ? Could that 2-4 hours a week be cut so that you play when you have time, or on your time schedule ? Ask yourself which is more important, your job or business, or golf. At one time I religiously played golf at least once a week. But not anymore and it has not depressed me, nor have I lost any friends.

Sports are serious business for the players and coaches. And they spend many hours in practice and play. But what about fans ? Do you expend 2, 4, 8 hours each week watching sports ? What if you focused on that one team you favor, and then cut watching time to 2 hours ? You could !

What about social clubs, or social activities ? Are they weekly ? Make them once a month or at longer periods. You will likely gain another 2-4 hours. Don't give up the contacts, just make contact at other times when it is convenient for you.

Then there are clubs. Okay to belong to one ? Surely. But restrict it to one, and perhaps do not attend all meetings. The Rotary Club, Lions Club, and others are useful, but not all at once, nor do not attend every meeting. Remember that it is your time being used up.

Also remember that golf, social clubs, and other clubs can divert your focus in terms of hours. They can also change your thinking which can change how you perform your primary focus. That can be good for you, or it can be wasteful.

It is easy to become involved in entanglements. Everyone, nearly, has some activity they would like for you to be involved in. But most will understand your declining when you explain your involvements already.

It can be hard at times to maintain your focus, and preserve effort time. Successful people understand the need, and are good at maintaining their focus and effort. But then everyone can do the same thing when they choose to. It is then up to you. Be selective, and then control the time you spend involved in each one.
