Katherine McPhee caught the eyes and ears of millions during season 5 of Fox television's "American Idol" and hopes to transform her success on the show into a successful music career.

If her first album is any indication, let's just say her future remains uncertain.

Periodically, McPhee's self-titled debut shows some shades of the artist we come to know and love on television. But, for the most part, the songs on this album seem to take McPhee in a completely different and unexpected direction.

The best tracks on the album are probably "Ordinary World," "Better Off Alone," "Everywhere I Go" and "Home". All seem to reflect the vibe she gave off on "Idol" and showcase her truly powerful and beautiful vocals.

However, after these four songs, the majority of the album seems to reside somewhere in the vicinity of mediocrity. Most of the tracks have what seems to be an unnatural R&B feel with very little originality. Some of those that seem to fall into this category are "Over It," "Not Ur Girl," and "Neglected."

The least impressive songs are most definitely "Open Toes" and "Dangerous," the first being unimaginative, the second having a very lack luster hook.

Overall, the good outweighs the bad and the album is probably slightly better than average. I don't doubt it will sell well, especially to R&B enthusiasts. But, if Katharine wants to survive a tough recording industry, she might have to tweak some things for future releases.

I'd rate this album a 3.5/5 or a C+.
