It's hard to imagine for some baby boomers how far the technology in the world of video games has advanced. Only 30 years ago people were astonished by Atari games like Pong and Space Invaders. Now they are considered relics of the video game world. Who would have ever thought that only thirty years later you would have the capability of carrying around a hand held system on which you could play video games. The hand held versions of video games have become a popular choice among video game players. Here are some of the top hand held video games of all time.

Nintendogs

This real-time game that simulates pets is one of the most popular hand held games of all-time. There have been five versions of the game released, all receiving excellent reviews and world-wide sales. Using the built-in microphone and touchscreen of the Nintendo-DS, players can pet their dog as well as buy or find things like frisbees, balls, grooming supplies, and toys to keep their dog happy. The microphone allows you to call the dog by name as well as give it commands like sit. Dogs will grow hungry and dirty as time elapses at which time you would need to feed or bath them. It also has a wireless application that will enable players to play along with others.

Nintendogs has received numerous awards including Best Handheld Game at the E3 2005 Game Critic Awards, "Best Game of 2005" from the Associated Press, 2006 Best Animal Friendly Video Game from PETA, and GameSpot's Editor's Choice Award.

New Super Mario Brothers

This Nintendo DS game was released in 2006 and quickly became one of the most popular handheld games of all-time. In the game, Mario must rescue Princess Peach from Bowser by battling through his flunkies. Mario has to get through 8 worlds and a total of 80 levels before he can finally face Bowser, Jr. and Bowser to save the Princess. Unique abilities are given to Mario by picking up power ups allowing him to use powers like Starman, Fire Flower, and Super Mushroom. The game received extremely high scores from just about every company involved in the video game industry, and is still popular today.

Pokemon Green, Red and Blue

This Gameboy series was originally released in 1996 with various versions coming out throughout 2004. There are various gameplay options, but the main theme is battling against other Pokemon. In 2009, Pokemon Red and Blue entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the "Best Selling Role Playing Game on Gameboy" as well as the best selling role-playing game of all time.
