The Country Girl reviews are going to be positive not only because the play has been directed by Tony Award winner Mike Nichols, but also because it has a great storyline. The story goes something like this. Frank Elgin was once a renowned theater actor but now has fallen on bad times and also has a severe alcoholic problem. Bernie Dodd, who is a well known stage director, believes that Frank has overcome his drinking problem and wants to hire him as the lead actor in his new musical. However, producer Phil Cook does not have faith in Frank.
Cook agrees to sign on Frank for two weeks and see how he performs. Bernie goes to Frank's house to give the good news and there he meets Georgie, Frank's wife. To hide his own shortcomings Frank creates an impression in Bernie's mind that Georgie is responsible for his drinking ways and his downfall. Bernie eventually falls in love with Georgie and tells her so. The play revolves around how Georgie helps Frank regain the confidence that he lost after his son's death.
