Most college students will have to deal with debt sometime during college. Nevertheless, this doesnt mean that we should not do whatever we can to avoid debt. Here are some alternatives to student loans, tips on how to pay off student loans if you do have obtained them, and excellent money saving habits.
Alternatives to Student Loans:
Obtaining a scholarship or grant is the best alternative to getting a student loan because they are free. Scholarships can be found if you just look for them and are awarded for many different reasons. Look for scholarships at the university you desire to attend, at organizations in your area, and online. Some of the local businesses and organizations that offer scholarships are the Lions Club, Optimist, Girls & Boys Club, and Retail Stores. Internet sites that will search for scholarships for you are FastWeb.com, Scholarships.com, and FreeScholarshipGuide.com. There are over 1000 grant programs offered by all Federal grant agencies. Apply for one of these grants at Grants.gov.
One other alternative to getting a student loan is to get a high paying full time job during the summer and a part-time job during the school year. Assess your abilities, talents, and skills to determine which job is perfect for someone like you.
Repaying Student Loans:
If you follow this simple advice you will be able to pay off your student loans quickly and painlessly. It may be difficult for the first little while, but soon you will get into the habit:
-Find a Low Rate: Look around for a loan with a low, locked in interesst rate.
-Pay Through School: Many student loans don't obligate you to pay through school, however, you should do it anyway. This can save you a lot of money.
-Never Miss a Payment: Missing one or two payments may seem harmless, but soon you will be in a bad habit and a lot of debt.
-Make Large Payments: If you make larger payments than what is required, you will be out of debt much faster.
Smart Shopping:
Typically debt problems are caused by our bad habits. Many people just scrape by regardless of how much or how little they're making. This is because they have formed poor spending habits. A great way to break these habits is to form new ones. Try looking for sales, shopping at discount stores, eating at restaurants less frequently, and going to matinees instead of evening movies. Certain movie theatres give discount tickets people with student ID's. If it's possible, share an apartment with many people. These are generally much cheaper. Think about living without a vehicle. This'll save you lots of gas money. Whenever you go out shopping consistantly ask the question "Do I truly need it?" before you buy anything and never go grocery shopping if you are hungry.
Don't end up cheating your future by racking up the debt during college. Listen to the advice in this article and you'll get out of college with small debts or even debt free! You will be glad you did!
