Ah, the bus! You ride the small one when you're in school. You ride the big one when you're working. You ride the huge one when you travel across the United States or when you go to a casino. You never know who you'll be sitting by or what types of conversations you'll accidentally overhear. Only one thing is for sure when you ride the bus. If you're in a bus accident, you'll quickly find yourself relying on your fellow passengers and vice versa.

Bus accidents happen more often in Florida than you might think. In 2006, the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Department reported that busses were involved in more than 2,000 accidents including 32 fatalities. The majority of the busses involved carried over 15 passengers. If you've ever been in a car accident, and remember how scared you were, you can imagine how that would be amplified with at least another 14 people in the same vehicle.

You could very well find yourself part of a group lawsuit against the driver, the owner of the bus company, their insurance companies and, perhaps, any other vehicle owners that were involved. In tough situations like this, you tend to rely on those that are dealing with the same situation you are. It helps to ensure that everyone understands what is going to have to happen so all those involved can get appropriate care and claim settlements.

Who owns the bus?

But how do you know who is responsible? Who owns the bus? The bus you were on could be owned by any number of entities:

· Local bus company

· City or regionally owned

· National company with local sub-contractors

· State government owned

If the bus you were on is government-owned, your accident claim may have a whole different set of rules you'll have to follow. All of them complicated and confusing, of course. Even local and city-owned bus companies can make it difficult for you to get compensated properly.

Nonetheless, busses are still one of the best ways to get large groups of people from point A to point B. As a passenger, you get the chance to meet new people. You can see all the countryside that passes by while not having to keep your eyes on the road. You can sleep, read, listen to music, work on your big presentation, put on makeup or text your best friend. You can relax and let someone else do the driving. You can know that if you are in a bus accident someday, you can quite likely rely on your fellow passengers for comfort and assistance.
