Elbow Room

Pay off my credit cards-how? I struggle just to stay even. I was one day late and they whacked me with a bigger payment and a higher interest rate. Retire on social security-you've got to be kidding! I will need more than that to live on, and besides the social security system is flat broke, and just recently we learned that payroll taxes paid in don't even equal the amount being paid out. How long will that work? If I earn money how much will the government confiscate?

I think I will just give up. Give up and grow a beard, live on the streets and wear a dirty smelly bandanna and remain flat broke. I've always fancied myself as a song writer anyway. Maybe I can earn money writing lyrics! The economy has me singing the blues, so I may as well write some lyrics. I'm reminded of the old television show, Hee-Haw. The classic music with lyrics that went something like this-"gloom, despair and agony on me, deep down depression, excessive misery…." I should have thought of that!

Problem is I'm not a musician. No, don't even know what those notes strung out on those lines they call bars is all about. I do know what a bar is though-a place to go and get drunk and let the bartender earn money! But sometimes a song or a jingle gets stuck in my brain, and I wonder how the lyrics might have gone if I had been given the music and ordered to-well, write the lyrics. Take the song, Elbow Room for example.

The first thing I would think about is the "elbow room" I have in my budget-the flat broke budget.. I would also think about the elbow room I have in my abilities to work and earn money, which is not much! The lyrics might go something like this:

One thing you will discover
or sign up for one of the others, is
Everybody needs a little pay day loan, pay day loan

It's nice when you go crazy,
Tangled up with bills and being lazy, oh
Everybody needs a day, needs a little way to get by loan

That's how we buy stuff here in the U.S.A.
We use credit cards at stores and restaurants, so
A pay day loan is the only way to go.

The banker he's a scrooge
And you and I can be a stooge
So why not pay a penalty or two (or three hundred or ten thousand)

So woe to you and me, a credit card account was sold to us
In the bank we trust
And gave us need for a personal loan.

Okay, enough, enough you say. You can't write music but you can complain too much! Go out there and earn money so you can pay your bills, for crying out loud! So I guess I will-pay my credit cards off-eventually that is. Where are scissors? I need to cut out this section of the help wanted ads.
