In the Lap of the Gods 15

In the Lap of the Gods is an ongoing saga of what my life was like as a young boy who was brought out to New Zealand by a widowed mother.

It recalls the experiences I had while attending three totally different boarding schools.

1)     The Duke of York's Royal Military School in Dover.

2)     Wesley College in Pukekohe New Zealand

3)     Wanganui Technical College in Wanganui New Zealand.

Obviously the first boarding school was a posh school that enrolled the sons of ex-military men many of whom died in the war. It was full of stiff upper lip and spit and polish but had a great spirit and tradition. Very strict and unforgiving.

Wesley College was a Wesleyan agricultural school set on a farm that guided boys from broken homes and the Pacific Island nations. It had a number of Maori students and as you can imagine it had a formidable rugby team. It was also a place where some atrocious bullying took place.

Wanganui Technical College specialised in the manual subjects of woodwork and metalwork for those with low academic skills and French and Latin for those elite few in the upper echelons. The school was split into boarders and day boys and what a competition that caused.

If you really want to get the whole feel for the ongoing story you need to start with In the Lap of the Gods1 and read through them all. This way you'll get a deeper understanding of how and why Steve reacted to certain situations.

This was the prologue that I should have put before Chapter 1. - Sorry!

Sisyphus (Sissy fuss) was a Greek prankster, and a scallywag who loved nothing better than to play tricks on the Gods of his time. He even shackled Death once and prevented him from returning to the Underworld. His carousing and disrespect finally had them riled enough to teach him a lesson.

He was exiled to a far off country where he was condemned for eternity to push a huge boulder up a mountain only to have it roll back down to the bottom each time.

It didn't pay to piss off the Gods; for eternity is a long, long time.
