Is The Duplicate Content Penalty A Myth?

If you've spent any time on the various discussion boards and forums related to internet marketing, you've probably heard about the duplicate content filters at Google. Some people claim they have proof they exist, others claim they have proof there is no such thing. What should you believe?

The fact is, nobody outside of the Googleplex knows for sure how Google deals with duplicate content. All we can do is test various things and track the results to make an educated guess.

As with most things in the internet marketing game, you can find people who claim to have the answer from both sides of the fence. I believe the true answer is somewhere in the middle.

If you've done much searching on Google, you've probably come across results where multiple sites in the top 10 contain the same information, in some cases the exact same article.

This is particularly true if you are searching for a popular news story that got picked up by multiple sites. For example, go to your favorite news blog and pull up an article from 2 or 3 months ago. Search for the headline from that article in Google, surrounded by quotes.

Chances are, there will be other sites in the top 10 that contain the same story, in many cases the exact same article. This is really no different than many newspapers all printing the same article from the AP news feed.

The fact that all these results are listed in Google tells me that they don't always filter out duplicate content. I think that what they do filter out is 100% duplicate content.

For example, if you buy a PLR (private label rights) article package and build a site using all the article without any changes, chances are there are other people doing the same thing. Those sites are going to be filtered for duplicate content.

But if you take those articles and mix them up with other content on your site so it isn't identical to any other single website, you've got a good chance of avoiding the duplicate content penalty.

Just how much it needs to be changed is another topic for debate, and one that I will address in another article.
