Finding a Good Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Rhinoplasty is, in general, one of the most challenging cosmetic surgeries to perform. It also has the highest rate of revision surgeries, with between 10 and 15 percent of rhinoplasty patients undergoing a second operation to refine the nose further or correct problems arising from the initial surgery. Therefore, it is extremely important to devote time and effort into finding the right surgeon for you.

One indication of a surgeon's skill and whether he is proficient enough to carry out a nose job well is whether he is board certified. To become board certified a surgeon has to have successfully completed a medical education and passed the board's examination to prove that he is capable of providing a good standard of medical care.

However, all certifying boards are not equal and have different requirements for surgical training and experience, and therefore being board certified should not be taken as the only indication as to whether a surgeon is highly capable. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have a good reputation for requiring high standards of their surgeons, and you can be relatively certain that an ASPS certified surgeon has an extremely high level of expertise and training. Rhinoplasty surgeons may also be certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).

When you first start looking for a good surgeon the internet is a good place to start. Look at the websites of the certifying boards as these often contain directories of qualified surgeons. Check out the websites of several clinics and read about their rhinoplasty procedures. Experienced surgeons often refine and improve the rhinoplasty techniques and make it their own, so you may find different clinics offer a slight variation in how they carry out the surgical procedure. Most websites provide testimonials and before and after pictures of previous rhinoplasty operations that have been carried out at the clinic. The more sites you look at the greater likelihood there is you will find a surgeon who best meets the needs for your surgery.

If possible, the most reliable way to find a good rhinoplasty surgeon is to speak to people who have already had a successful nose job. Nearly 400,000 Americans have the procedure every year, so there are many people you can ask for recommendations. If you do not know anyone who has had plastic surgery then the internet can help. There are several forums available on the internet where you can speak to people who have already undergone rhinoplasty, as well as getting support from other people who are considering a nose job.

Once you have found the surgeon who will possibly be carrying out your rhinoplasty, you will need to book a consultation. Many clinics offer this initial consultation free of charge and you are under no obligation to commit to surgery. The first consultation is very important as you will be able to better assess how qualified the surgeon is and whether you feel comfortable at the clinic where the operation will be carried out. You will also discuss if you are a suitable rhinoplasty patient and if you have realistic expectations of what can be achieved. Most clinics will also provide a referral list of previous patients who you can contact to discuss their experiences.

The best way to locate a good rhinoplasty surgeon is to do your homework. The more time you devote to researching it the better. If you are unhappy with your nose a quick fix option is tempting, but bear in mind that the finest rhinoplasty surgeons may be booked up months in advance. A nose job is often a permanent change - allowing a few extra months in order to research more thoroughly can be extremely beneficial.
