The city of Delhi is the national capital of India and is a witness to a rich historical past. There are many monuments in the city which bear testimony to the fact that it was the seat of power in the years gone by.

The National Capital Region is a place of frenzied activity and hustle-bustle. But still there are some places which provide immense relief from the noise and pollution of the city. There are some really outstanding natural places in and around the city which offer solace to the mind and body.

These soul-soothing natural places are the lakes which are located in the Capital as well as in the peripheral areas. These lakes offer a pleasant atmosphere for relaxation and rejuvenation and spending a day or an evening in these environs is indeed a worthwhile experience.

Most of these lakes are home to migratory birds and are a paradise for bird watchers. Some of the lakes have the facilities for water sports too. One can easily spend a day in the lap of nature at any of these lake areas.

Some of these lakes are being maintained by the government agencies and have both amenities for lodging and boarding.
Bhalswa Lake has been developed by the Delhi Development Authority in the north-east part of the city. It is one of the favorite picnic spots for the locals as well as the visitors. The property consists of a sports and leisure complex where the visitors can enjoy the pleasures and activities like pedal boating, kayaking, canoeing and speed boats. Hovercrafts and water scooters are also available on rent at this lake.

Sohna Lake is located at a distance of 60 kilometers in the state of Haryana. This place is situated amidst the Aravalli Hills and is fast developing in to a health resort of sorts. There is a picturesque lake as well as hot spring on the property. There are good arrangements for an overnight stay with some beautiful mud cottages in the premises. The lake resort also provides facilities for water sports and camping.

Badhkal Lake is also another popular picnic spot near Delhi. This lake is located in Faridabad District of Haryana State which is 35 kilometers from the NCR. The lake complex provides a picturesque view and is also perfect for people looking out for peace and solitude. This water body is also home to many migratory birds. Although the lake doesn't have too much water during the summer season, yet the monsoons are the best bet to visit this lake area. The government run rest house also provides facilities for lakeside tents. People can also enjoy boating and fishing in the lake.

Nestled among the Aravalli Hills, nearly 50 kilometers away from Delhi, is located the Damdama Lake which is truly a natural bliss. Situated in the center of the lake is the resort which is a perfect setting for a day out or an overnight stay by the lakeside. This resort can be only accessed by a boat which is provided by the resort. The water in the lake depletes in the summer and is again revived by the monsoons. There are lots of activities for everyone that includes boat rides, rock climbing, obstacle race, treasure hunt and trekking on the hill.

Apart from these, there are also other water bodies which are just as mesmerizing and enchanting. These include the Surajkund Lake Complex, Taliyar and Sultanpur which is also incidentally a haven for ornithologists and also was a favorite hangout for noted ornithologist Salim Ali.
