Adventure sports, especially water sports such as kayaking and snorkeling have a large following. Most people who take part in these sports would love to have their feats recorded for posterity, on a good digital camera, but are unable to do so, for fear of the water ruining the camera.

That's where a waterproof camera comes in, handy. In this article, I am going to see whether a Pentax waterproof camera stands up to scrutiny.

Pentax is both waterproof and dustproof. A Japanese Industry Standard certification to this effect has been awarded to Optio W30, the latest model, which has been found to conform to Japanese Industry Standard JIS Dustproof Standard 5 and (JIS) Waterproof Standard 8. This camera can be used at upto 10 feet depth of water for up to two hours, continuously.

The camera owes its sleek looks to its rugged aluminum alloy body and soap bar design. It is available in silver-grey, bright chrome, and matte silver shades.

The 5.6oz camera fits in the palm of an adult hand, and yet, is hefty enough to allow efficient handling. A strap fastens it to your wrist, and the camera is truly waterproof, with adequate sealing for the DC and the USB/AV jacks below it; the battery and storage card compartment have rubber gaskets to shield them.

Good image quality is owing to the optical 3X zoom lens (built in to enhance portability). The narrow range of the aperture limits options for landscape photography. But, a Digital Shake Reduction mode helps deliver blur-free photos at high ISO of 3200. Movie as well as underwater image quality is excellent.

The camera's features include Auto Mode, Synchro Sound Record Mode, Digital Shake Reduction, 22 MB memory, a large 2.5-inch display, Movie Shake Reduction, Drive/ Burst Mode, Movie Mode, Playback Mode, Manual Control options, protective covers and doors with spring-loaded latches that secure automatically etc, and decent shutter speed.

The size of the internal memory allows continuous movie shooting up to 20 seconds.

Low resolution, narrow aperture range, absence of autofocus illuminator light and active CCD anti-blur, apart, the Optio W30 is a great camera at a shockingly low price.
