Weightlifting Programs - Training Too Often

If you're like most beginners in the field of strength training and muscle building, you have most likely started out your program with a lot of enthusiasm. This is quite understandable, and it is not a bad thing to want to make great progress as quickly as possible. However, if you're not careful, you may accidentally overdo it in the gym.

While you definitely need a high level of intensity in your weightlifting routines, you have to be careful not to overdo it. Remember that there are two critical components that will grow your muscles. Firstly you must challenge your muscles beyond their previous limits in order to force muscle growth. Secondly (and this is a part that many people forget), you must give your muscles adequate rest, for this is when your muscles will grow. While working out in the gym will stimulate muscle growth, the actual growth will occur while you are resting. You would think that would be common knowledge by now, yet some people spend far too much time in the gym. After a while, your body can become so taxed that you will no longer be making progress in building muscle. If you can't lift more weight during each new training session, you may not be spending enough time in recovery between workouts.

Expert fitness trainer Vincent Delmonte put it this way: Every day is a joint day. Every day is an immune system day. Every day is a central nervous system day. Every day is a hormone day.

What he means by this is that your muscles are not the only parts of your body that require rest after an intense workout session. Your entire body including your central nervous system and endocrine system need time to recover. Even if you switch to a different muscle group each day a week you may be putting yourself at risk for exhaustion followed by injury, illness, or at least a halt in your workout progress.
