Mental breakdown is better known as nervous breakdown in the medical terms. It is usually used to describe a person who is going through a mental sickness like depression or even anxiety. In the yesteryears, this disorder was known as melancholia, vapors, neuralgic disease, neurasthenia and prostration.

In beginning, all the doctors and the medical professionals thought of it to be a disorder of the nervous system. Then later on they realized that the disorder is due to a disease in the mind of the person. The nomenclature in today's world includes a number of clinical diagnoses that are present in the DSM-IV. The DSM-IV includes psychotic break schizophrenic episode, manic break, post traumatic stress disorder, panic attack.

A mental breakdown is a state of intense emotional or psychological stress but is a non-medical publicly coined word. Symptoms of a more grave mental disorder are commonly misinterpreted as a mental breakdown. A mental breakdown wreck can be more aptly described as a brief psychotic experience which is totally unrelated to reality

Causes of mental breakdown:
A nervous breakdown mainly occurs due to exposure to extreme or unremitting overwhelming stress. The examples of both men and women are given by a man might come back from a war whereas he might have entered it in a normal state.

In the case of a female, a woman might have been perfectly normal until she gave birth to a child, after which she might have experienced a post partum depression. In short, nervous breakdown can occur to any one at any point of time. Some people have breakdowns which were bound to happen. The reason of such type of depression is due to genetic disorder like schizophrenia or bi polar depression.

Effects of mental breakdown:
The effects of mental breakdown may lead to difficulty in focusing on work or other related things. When changing from one thing to another, the person might get disoriented and forget what one was doing. The patient might also feel angry and irritable for a very long time. The person may also frequently turn up late for work.

The person may stop finding joy in anything and this negativity sets in forever. He might also have trouble in getting sleep thus leading to insomnia. One might also begin to fall ill frequently and also experience severe headaches. A perfect example of mental breakdown, is that one day one might go to work and feel tremendously depressed. One may not be able to get oneself out of it. The person might feel frustrated and become almost non-functional.
