Courier - Packing Guidelines
How often do we pay attention on the importance of the packing when making a parcel courier? If the packing has not been done properly, chances of breaking or getting your stuff damaged increases. Therefore, before couriering anything, make sure that all your packages are packed sufficiently well to protect them during their shipping and it is your responsibility to ensure that the packaging is done adequately. The amount of packaging is obviously dependent on the type and value of the goods being transported. Considering that the courier companies endeavor to take good care of your parcel, but the parcels are man-handled and transported within vehicles - so chances of them being dropped or otherwise getting damaged exists!
To help minimize any damage to your items in transit, consider some tips listed below that would surely help in maintaining the integrity of your parcel.
Do not overload. When sending items, particularly big or heavy items do not overload boxes. Lower weight means less chance of goods being heavily handled, or dropped.
Spread out any valuable items amongst the packages. If you are sending numerous items to the same address don't put all your valuable items in the same box.
Balance the weight within the box. When packing, take care of balancing the weight within your packing box, as an unevenly packed box is more likely to suffer damage due to instability.
Use a big enough box. The box should have enough space to accommodate all the item(s).This avoids skimping on internal packaging. It is always advisable to use a double-wall box for heavy items.
Use a strong box. It is always suggested to use built-for-purpose containers and if required, they can be asked for from the courier company itself. Saving a penny and using old boxes that may be weak or damaged is likely to affect the entirety of your parcel.
Wrap each item within the container. This would ensure that the contents of the container don't come into contact with each other and cause damage to each other. Particularly protect fragile items.
Allow at least two inches of packing around breakable or fragile Items. It is suggested not to rely only on shredded or torn up newspaper, instead use polystyrene peanuts and bubble wrap.
Ensure there is no movement of items within the box. This is the single biggest reason for damage to contents in transit. Ensuring that all the items are intact and packed properly will minimize chances of them getting damaged or even broken.
Place some scrap cardboard under the final seal of each box. When the knife cuts in to open the box it does not damage the contents. Sealing the edges too, adds stability and reduces the risk of snagging and tampering.
Seal the parcel well. Tape all joints with packing tape and for extra protection seal the corners as well. Heavy boxes should be sealed with a fabric tape rather than simple brown tape.
Write the address clearly on the box. Writing address on the labels is fine, but they can come unstuck anytime. Take care to protect the labels by using clear tape. It's wise to include your own name with your contact details on the box helps in case of returns. Particularly be careful with address when using any International courier service.
If still in doubt regarding your packaging of your parcel, consider whether your parcel could be dropped from 4 feet height without damage. If the answer is 'No' then further packing is suggested.
