There is a lot of mystery surrounding hypnosis as it has been used for many years by magic shows and entertainment as a means of controlling others. However it is also a valid treatment used by psychiatrists to help those with mental disorders. It is known as hypnotherapy when used in this context.

Hypnotherapy can be used either as a stand alone therupy or combined with other treatments. This method of treatment has been found to be very effective for stopping smoking and weight loss. This has become a big business for those who know how to use this skill.

Hypnosis is also used for other puposes in the medical profession. For example personality disorders, which may have their roots in a persons childhood experiences. This treatment is known as regression, as it takes a person back in time to try to pinpoint the events that could have triggered the problem. There is some controversy about this method of treatment in the medical profession, dispite the fact that there are several examples of successful results with this method.

In order to help a patient with minor problems like losing weight or stopping smoking self-hypnosis can be used. The doctor will train the patient to do this and continue their therupy by this method. They can stay on their diet more easily or stay away from cigarettes by doing this. It is commonly used in other forms of self-help therupy, like boosting self-esteem. It is not usually used in personality orders as theses cases need careful monitoring.

So what exactly is this mysterious art of controlling another person's mind. When the therupist performs his teatment he taps into the subconcous part of the mind. He can only do this by making the subject fall into a trance or sleeping state. This is when the concious mind ceases to function and the subconcious mind will take over. This part of the mind will deal with memory and controls some of our personality traits. When the therupist has contol ove this section of the mind he is able to make the subject do anything he tells them to do. He can also evoke memories of the past that the subject may have forgotton.

Hypnosis should never be practised for fun or without a skilled therupist as it can prove very dangerous to your mental health when done incorrectly. It is a valid form of treatment but some caution should be excersised when practising it.
