What Are You Really Eating?

While I was on my cruise back in April I observed how foods were cooked at restaurants, in the buffet and cafes.

Interesting enough I found out that the food description on the label on how it was prepared was different then how it was actually cooked. On top of the claim that it was cooked healthy for you they added extra oils and fats to make it appealing to you and TASTY.

When you go out to a restaurant, you expect that you get food cooked the way it's described on the menu, right? In other words, if it says "grilled" then you think of an open flame type of grill like the one you might see at a family barbecue. NOT SO, when we order foods "grilled," most of us assume they'll be cooked on an open flame, but many times it's a flat-top grill, where some type of grease or oil is necessary to create an even cooking surface, increase the cooking speed and prevent the food from sticking.

I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound healthy to me. I don't want to be tricked by eating something that will make me fatter when its label says it's healthy and fresh and it's the opposite, Are we being led to believe one thing, yet "fed" another?

How about when you order steamed vegetables as opposed to fried (or is it grilled?)? You need to make sure that the vegetables were not soaked in oil during the day (marinated) to add flavor. Another example: you might order an egg white omelet not knowing that the same amount of oil is used in the pan to prepare it as regular omelets. The oil is going to have A LOT of FAT and calories and may be you are eliminating the extra fat in the yolks; you're still getting a lot of the unhealthy oil calories. (Sort of cancels the purpose of having an egg-white omelet doesn't it).

There are many examples of how restaurants are not giving us the complete picture of what we're eating in there restaurants. If you understand that any restaurant preparing your meal/food is not going to be as healthy as what you could do on your own, then you've got a start in the right direction. Any manufacturer of food or food products has to adjust to the conditions of making, mixing, boxing, packaging, shipping, and preserving in bulk quantities. That means an alteration in the original quality of the product... and no, not for the better.

One of the biggest problems in our country is ignorance and lack of knowledge when it comes to the PROPER fitness and nutrition. As individuals, we have to be responsible and take some of the blame. But as a busy society, we also have to hold those manufacturers and food preparers responsible for providing the best quality product without sacrificing the quality, nutrients and not add in chemicals to our foods. The excuse could be that it's not possible or too expensive. Well, it's pay now or pay later because the health consequences are showing up in greater numbers than ever before.

Obesity, diabetes, sickness, sluggishness, attention deficits, lower productivity at work, decreased income, costlier health care, decreased communication, broken relationships, and on and on. All because we don't have an abundance of healthy choices to keep our blood stream clean, our hearts functioning well, and our minds focused on being passionate about life.

Next time you go out to a restaurant pay attention to how the food is made, compare it to what the menu describes the food as and ask the waitress questions your health and well being will thank you for your kindness to your body.
