There are many home based business owners that start a business every day based solely on a product that they personally love. And although this can be good for business in the beginning the key question is do you really know your customer and do you really know what they want? Understanding this is the key to the life of your home business.

I go to the bank drive up windows everyday. I use separate banks for my business and personal accounts. I have been with my personal bank for over 20 years; I have been with my business bank for about five years. Recently the bank where my business account is calls me by name, asks if need any checks or deposit slips, provides a pen and paper in the carrier and always comments on the weather. After they complete my transaction they often will let me know of some benefit they offer with my type of account, like free cashiers checks and provide me with brochures on services and ways to comment on their service.

These little touches are great for their business because they make me feel comfortable and like they care. My personal bank still doesn't even know how long I've been giving them my business.

And how did my business bank know to make those changes? They asked.

As an online home business owner you may not be able to look your customer in the eye, it is still your responsibility to know what and how your customers want to be served if you want to ensure the growth of your business. So here are a few ways to gather than information:

Send an email -if you have a list this is great, just drop them a line on how you can better service them. People love to tell you what they would like more of.

Create a survey -there are many online survey companies where you can create the survey and they compile all the results for you.

Ask a question -go to any forum or blog in your industry and ask a question. Create a video. This can start some really great debate on the topic.

Social Media Sites -this is one of my favorite places. People are already being social, just pose a questions or a comment on customer service and see what different views you get on what people like and don't like.

Whatever method you choose never lose site of the importance of communication. Getting to know your customers is your key to long term success.
