In Canada there are 37 national parks which serve to protect and preserve. Managed by the federal government these parks also feature 129 National Historical Sites which include forts, battle sites, pioneer homesteads and the like.

The Rocky Mountain parks are by far the most popular of the group. In addition to all the beauty and recreation that surrounds the mountains. It is here visitors find the westernmost Canadian Heritage Site - the former Haida Indian Village of Ninstints. This site is believed to have been inhabited by Natives for more that 2000 years. Experiencing the western edge of the continent is best from pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver island. Aside from the amazing surf and sun, the area boasts the oldest and tallest trees in the country.

On the other side of the country Cape Breton Highlands National park is one of the most scenic places in Canada. It gained its reputation from one of the best-known roads in the country - the Cabot trail. The road winds right along the shoreline and at times runs up and down steep mountains, past barren plains and through lush valleys. Cyclists and sports car drivers are in heaven here.

Wood Buffalo National Park on the border of Alberta and the Northwest Territories is one of the world largest parks. It is larger than Switzerland. This is also the home of the world largest herd of free-roaming buffalo - 6000 at last count. It is also the world only nesting site for the endangered whooping crane. It is the only park in the world that is inside the Arctic Circle.
