There are hundreds of door knobs on the market today. They range in price, finish and style. But all have one thing in common. Over time, they will tarnish and corrode. So, how do you keep your door hardware looking as bright as the day it was installed?

It can be easier and less expensive than you think.

Here are three easy ways from AHA to keep your Door Hardware Newer Longer

1. Polish the metal

All metals tarnish over tarnish over time. There are all kinds of polished on the market that you can easily get at your local drug, grocery, or hardware store.

There are polishing cloths, spray solutions, creams and compounds. The most important thing to know before purchasing anything is the kind of metal your hardware is.

Some manufacturers use metal paint in place of the real thing. Gold paint will not respond to gold polish.

2. Dry lubricate the door latch annually

Door latch mechanisms should be lubricated annually with a dry lubricant made specifically for that use. This will keep the latch opening smoothly. Do not try to lubricate the latch with any other type of grease as this can cause the lock mechanism to stick and prevent the door from opening at all.

3. Read the maintenance manual and warranty

This seems like a boring and pointless exercise but it can prove to be very important. As the owner of a product, it is your responsibility to know how long a product's warranty extends for, the terms of warranty and what the warranty covers.

Understanding the manual can save you time. If you read it through, often times, when a problem arises, you will know exactly where the solution is in the manual. You may even remember what you read already and not have to refer to the manual at all.

A little bit of elbow grease and good preparation will enable you to keep your door hardware looking newer, longer. Maintaining hardware is easier and faster that you may have thought possible. So, take the time to keep the finish looking bright.
