This lady arrived in 1984 here in this small town, confident that she can become a world class runner and a competitor in the Olympics. Four short years have enabled her to see it all through her greenish brown eyes. She was able to bag sixth place when she competed in the 1988 Olympics held in Seoul Korea as she joined the 3,000 meter run. This young world class runner finally graduated from the local school last December. Being known as the princess of American middle distance running only at 23 years of age, she was able to bag herself an endorsement deal with a famous shoe brand.

But as of the moment, this girl from Delaware chose to stick to her roots. She gets to roam around the environs of the campus as she goes on her usual workouts. The feet of this five foot six, 110 pound runner barely touch the ground as she races against her own finish line. She is always awkward with her newfound fame especially when people ask for her autograph. She is such an unassuming lady shares that she is just a normal person that doesn't really deserve any form of special treatment.

Though truly normal, she is light years from being average. In her town, she is the first female Olympian. She is a proud member of 7 world record relay teams as well as four American collegiate records. Because of her athletic leadership, their school took home 14 championship titles in the Big East finals as well as 8 individual NCAA championship honors. That's not all for she's also got tons of the major awards.

Going beyond the life of competing in collegiate sports events now, she and her running coach are already planning out her promising career in running. She has to adjust her mentalities to accommodate this big change. It's hard for people to understand unless they've been through it. The great pressure she feels that drives her to running greatness is mostly exerted by her own self. She worries about getting injured while she is still within the three year contract after the famous shoe firm got her to represent them. She's become more anxious now than during the days that she competed in collegiate competitions thanks to a lot of people's greater expectations from her.

People are now asking if the local woman's track team would survive without her invaluable leadership. She guarantees that they can for their one great team. She values her privacy and wants to protect herself from the notoriety, pressures and responsibilities in her life. Even her brother, sister and parents had to adjust to the fact that people know them too so they have to accept some adjustments. She recalls that she has grown up with parents who are not pushy, but are very laid back and supportive.

Her stardom allows her to gain access to the exceptional company she keeps. Her friends include an elite group of athletes whom most of us have to be content just to watch on TV. She does sound out names but not out of conceit but out of genuine affection toward these people whom she has common ties with. A good example would be this during her return from Hawaii in June where she went on tour with another runner, she shares that the last time she had since him was way back during the time they both competed in the Olympics. She truly enjoyed the three days they had fun and talked about the old times.

She doesn't seem to run out of things to do even as she shares that she's got more time than she'd like. Beyond her daily practices, she also finds herself busy as a public icon, getting involved in various track meets, banquets, photo sessions, features and other similar activities. She would also like to give back by offering some of her time and talent as a volunteer assistant track coach at the local school.

Being a volunteer in an area hospital will also enable her to keep up with the medical career she has put on hold. That may help the former psychology and premed major decide whether to continue with medicine once she's finished running professionally. Has she thought about her immediate future? She avers that even if she really wants to have a great family, this will have to wait after she has become a successful and established athlete. But as of the moment, she only wants to do what she wants and reach all her dreams.
