A home and contents insurance policy is a good idea, and renters can also get this type of coverage, although they call it home insurance. A consumer may not know what items this type of policy will or will not replace and insurance companies may exclude certain items or the conditions under which they may be replaced.

Normal home contents insurance insures the items into the home up to a certain value, but this includes items that have a value. Pictures, nick-knacks and mementos are generally not covered under this type of policy, although furniture, computers, and electronics are. More expensive items may need to be declared individually. The deductible still applies, as it always does.

Whether a property owner or renter has cheap home insurance or the best home insurance does not matter. The basic policies work the same way as all other policies do. If a person has items stolen or damaged in a fire or a natural disaster, he can make a claim against his policy and have the insurance company reimburse them.

Read the fine print of these policies carefully - sometimes items like lawn mowers, bicycles and other items that are normally kept outside are not replaced under these policies, sometimes they are. The bicycle will probably not concern most people unless they own a more expensive model.

Guarding the contents of your home against loss is not most people's immediate thought. When they buy a home or other property, they are most interested in insuring the building for its values. Banks usually make a borrower carry this type of insurance in the first place. When shopping around, be sure to do a house insurance comparison of the services and rates offered. If a company offers home contents insurance separately, take a note of that as well. Sometimes the contents are insured as part of a home owner's policy, other times a home owner or renter must buy the coverage separately.

While getting the lowest prices is a good thing, you do not want to skip on house insurance, particularly if you own a few pricey items. Items that are normally inside of your home that are stolen outside of your home are usually not covered under these policies. Again, this applies to items like bicycles, but can also apply to certain electronic items such as laptop, and notebook PCs.
