You may not be aware of this but there is something of a secret craze in amongst celebrity circles. The craze is hypnosis and celebrities are flocking to hypnotherapists to help them overcome addictions, lose weight and improve their lives in many other ways.
Hypnosis is a mental state that allows the subconscious to be programmed with agreed upon suggestions. The process usually begins with the hypnotherapist talking with their client about what they hope to achieve. Common goals include weight loss, smoking cessation, confidence building and relaxation, however, there are many more things that can be achieved with hypnosis. The session itself will then begin with a hypnotic induction to place the client in trance. The word "trance" sounds quite magical and even a little new-agey but in reality it is just a heightened sense of focus. The client is actually awake and aware of what is going on around them at all times. Once the hypnotherapists is happy that their client is in a deep enough trance they will then begin to implant suggestions into their subconscious mind. After this has been completed the session typically ends with a countdown from ten to one. The hypnotherapists will then welcome their client back from trance.
So which celebrities have used hypnosis? Well there is a therapist/client vow of confidentiality, but many celebrities have gone on record as having used hypnosis. Recently English pop star Lily Allen came out and said she was hypnotized in an effort to lose weight. She said of her hypnotic experience, "After the hypnotism, I want to go to the gym every day, otherwise I feel really bad. I just want to get more toned and healthy. I'm really good about everything at the moment - I've never been happier." And it's not just Lily Allen who has successfully lost weight with hypnosis. Sophie Dahl, Geri Halliwell and Courtney Love have all reported similar experiences.
Kevin Costner is said to have employed a personal hypnotist to help him with his sea sickness while filming Waterworld. Mel Gibson has gone a step further by actually learning hypnosis himself under the aid of Australian hypnotist Rick Collingwood. Rick has gone so far to say that Mel, with his piercing blue eyes, is a natural hypnotist.
Without a doubt though the celebrities most commonly use hypnosis to help them quit smoking. Billy Joel, Drew Barrymore, Ellen DeGeneres, Ashton Kutcher, Charlize Theron, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have all used hypnosis to give up smoking. In fact, during an interview with Jay Leno, Matt Damon was quoted as saying, "Using hypnosis was one of the greatest decisions of my life!"
While it can be expensive to hire a hypnotherapist, you don't have to be a celebrity to be able to afford hypnosis treatment. Many top hypnotherapists now operate their own websites where they sell their sessions on CDs and MP3s. So if you're interested in trying hypnosis for yourself all you need to do is a simple search of the web.
