Do Calorie Shifting Diets Work?

Calorie shifting diets are interesting in that you are not on a strict diet every day. You get to eat what you want every couple days. I thought this was just another fad diet that might help you to lose weight in the short run. However, one of my friends was trying the Every Other Day Diet, so I decided to do some research.
What is Calorie Shifting?
A typical calorie shifting diet has you eat different foods and vastly different amounts of calories on different days of the week, seeking to create a calorie deficit without slowing the metabolism. Most calorie shifting diets have several days a week where you need to eat less calories than you need, and a couple days a week where you eat more calories than you need (bring on the pizza!). Some of the diets are very specific in the amount of calories that you can eat daily while others focus more on portions and the types of foods that you eat. But, the overall premise for all is the same, create a weekly calorie deficit without letting your body adjust to eating less calories per day.
But Why?
On a regular diet, your body adjust quickly to taking in less calories. This leads to your body actually burning less calories, and you stop losing weight (have you ever been in a weight loss rut?). By varying the amount of calories daily, your body is not able to readjust its calorie burning levels. Add in some exercise and you will actually speed up your metabolism. And, because of the days where you get to eat more calories than you need, you never diet for more than two or three days in a row.
Does it Work?
Of course it will not work without effort. You do have to be disciplined and stick to the plan. But if you do, you can lose weight much faster than if you simply tried a 1200 calorie diet plan. And the best part is that your metabolism speeds up in the process, which means when you go off of the diet, you won't experience the yo-yo effect.
