As public attention is drawn increasingly to humanity's effect on the environment, it is imperative we all try and do as much as we can to cut down on our own impact. The level of waste we dispose of is immense, and growing by the day. It is here that recycling bins can be so useful.

By recycling waste, the materials can be used for further purposes or converted into new products. The most standard of recycling bins should be freely available in your area. If you have not been provided with bins for recycling, your first step should be to contact your local council and see if they give them out free of charge.

If a council are running such a scheme for local business and households, they will most likely also have a collection schedule. As there are various types of bins each may be collected on a different day. However, this is something that tends to be decided by local authorities and varies considerably from county to county and even town to town.

Whilst unlikely, it this avenue does not prove useful there are many places where you can buy recycling bins for yourself. The collected recyclables can then be taken to a local recycling centre. You may have to make enquiries as to where the nearest centre is, but often they are placed near to shopping centres or supermarkets.

As touched upon above, there are different types of bins for the collection of different types of materials. The most commonly recycled household materials are paper and cardboard, plastics, glass and metals.

Whilst it is likely that you may be able to dispose of two materials in the same bin (say plastics and glass for example), it is most common to have a separate container for each.

There are many that argue that waste should be sorted by individual organisations and departments collecting it before it is taken to landfill. To be fair, this is something that already happens in many cases. But of course, it is a very time consuming, tedious, arduous and manual task. By using recycling bins you are aiding the process, just doing your bit.

Going further than recycling at home is also possible; there are more and more public bins appearing that are taking an increasing number of items. Clothing and shoes have been recycled for many years now of course; but there was recently an exciting new type of bin announced.

Allowing for the secure and safe recycling of electronic products, the E-Waste bin could be something of a revolution. Due to debut in New York throughout 2010, it is an initiative that already has credence and is set to rise in popularity on a global scale.

We already know that sacrifices will have to be made to stem the release of harmful pollutants into the environment, and stop and then reverse the damage already caused as much as possible. It is not going to be easy, and it is going to be a long term project. Our use of recycling bins is only a small step on that road - but all journey's start with that first step.
