There are many storage shed designs available online that will meet almost any backyard shed requirement, from the simplest to the most ambitious project. Whatever your requirements, obtaining one of the professionally drawn storage shed designs may be critical to completing a successful and cost-effective project.

Shed plans often include a handy materials list which ensures that you will order the correct materials, avoid wastage, and save money. Many plans also include a step-by-step instruction guide that can be very useful, especially if this is your first storage shed building project.

Plans also give you a better idea of what the end product will look like once construction is complete. Most storage shed designs available include either 3-D illustrations or photographs of the completed project so you will have a very good indication of whether the size and the style of the shed will fit in with your existing home and garden.

Design Considerations

Before deciding on the final plan for your outdoor shed, here are some of the factors which you should consider first:

Function: What are you going to use the shed for? Your future outdoor shed is probably going to be the most flexible addition to your home. Outdoor sheds can be so much more than just storage space to de-clutter garages. They can also be used as play areas for children, a workshop or a hobby room, a potting shed, or even an artist's studio. Plan your shed to meet your future requirements.

Location: Before settling on a location for your new shed, take into consideration boundary regulations and possible future additions to your house or garage - if you build your shed in the wrong location it may get in the way of possible future extensions.

Size: The usage you have in mind for the shed has direct bearing on the floor size required. If you're planning a storage shed, make sure that it is big enough.

Style: An outdoor shed should not only be functional, but look good as well and preferably blend into its garden setting and tone in with existing buildings. Of course, you can add your own flair to the design, perhaps duplicating some of the design elements of your existing house.

Openings: Also take into consideration what kind of windows and vents to use. Sheds used purely for storage will need less light and ventilation than sheds that are to be used as playrooms or hobby rooms. For example, a potting shed or artist's studio may benefit from some skylights to enjoy continuous diffused lighting. Also, make sure you fit the correct door for the correct purpose. Larger equipment or items of furniture will need wider access.
