Translink and Google to Go For It.

Urban issue-themed blog Just a Gwai Lo recaps the Google Transit and Translink collaboration in its latest post. The companies recently announced plans to display Vancouver transit routes overlayed on Google Maps. Blogger Richard Eriksson was present when Google engineer John Hughes demonstrated the features. “He presented it very well, framing the service around stories of people hearing about an event and figuring out how to get there”

The post also includes technical questions the blogger posed to the engineers as well as the engineer’s responses. In addition, Eriksson asked about Google Bike maps for the region, which the engineer states was a “good idea if a little more difficult, since many bike routes are on low-traffic streets and trails.”

Canucks vs. Flames Preview

A quick preview of tonight’s game is posted on Waiting for Stanley, where the blogger posits that a slow start-up would be bad news for Vancouver. “The Flames are a quick team and need to be kept to the outside and the Nucks will have to take it to them early.”

The post suggests that the long layoff between games may mean rusty players. It’s been five days since the Canucks’ victory over Colorado, whereas the Flames have only been out for three days. The blogger notes Kesler’s attitude that “It’s actually kind of painful having to wait so long between games.” Despite this, as well as Cowan’s injury recently announced as “more serious than expected,” we should expect a fast-paced, hard-hitting game, especially if the Canucks “can carry any momentum and lessons learned from the Colorado game.”

No Tears Shed for Restaurant Casualty

Once again our Urban Diner brings us news of another Vancouver restaurant closure. This time the victim is the nineteen year old Chianti Café on West 4th due to delinquency in rent. The owner of the restaurant cites “increased competition, a fast changing neighbourhood, Vancouver city council’s parking policies” and the fact that “carbs are bad for you” as some of the reasons for the closure.

In the post the blogger expresses his condolences, although reminds readers that it wasn’t a great restaurant by any means. “Let’s face it, this was a pretty sh*tty restaurant with bad food and amateur service” especially compared to new competitors such as Gastropod, Fuel, and the Noodle Box.

Master Folders to Converge in Vancouver

The most recent blog post by Gung Haggis Fat Choy announces the Pacific Origami Conference November 9-11 at the Fairmont Hotel. In conjunction with the conference is an incredible display at the Pendulum in the HSBC Building (855 West Georgia) featuring “over 100 origami pieces created, designed and folded by Origami Masters from 10 different countries.” The display will up until November 17th.

The post advises that according to festival organizer Yukiko Tosa the best day to attend is Saturday Nov. 10th from 9 am -6 pm. The exhibits will be of origami artists from all over the globe and are free to the public. If your imagination is limited to the boats and cranes you learned to fold in elementary school, check out the blog for photos of master folders work as well as links to Vancouver’s own Joseph Wu, who makes a full-time living by designing origami.
