The world has started saying no to plastic bags. It is being completely banned in several nations while its usage is being brought down in some others. More and more people are opting for a safer, better alternative - the reusable, eco-friendly bags. But we know that the plastic bags are free, easily available and even more easily disposable. So why is this shift all of a sudden?

The plastic bags had gained popularity largely due to the fact that they are free. But they actually have a cost and it is paid unknowingly by our environment and society. A large amount of petroleum and natural gas is consumed for the production of these plastic bags. These are non-renewable resources and excessive unnecessary usage would result in scarcity. The production procedure of plastic bags also requires plenty of toxic substances which cause pollution and harm to our environment. The huge energy consumption required for the production of plastic bags also contributes to global warming. Although these bags come as free for the consumers, there is actually a cost incurred by the retailers. Approximately four billion dollars are incurred by the U.S. retailers alone. So when these bags are distributed, the costs are generally passed on to the consumers in the form of a higher cost for the products they are purchasing. These bags are mostly littered on land or disposed off in the water. When disposed in such state, many animals mistake them for food and get choked to death. Moreover, it takes thousands of years for these bags to break down and when it does, it slowly breaks up into tiny toxic particles that contaminate soil and water. So even if it apparently seems that these bags are free and easily available, they actually make us pay up with our society and planet's safety and future.

These facts have led to more and more people opt for reusable, eco-friendly bags as a safer and better alternative to the harmful plastic bags. These bags are often made of non-woven polypropylene which can be easily recycled. The production procedure is simple and it can be made into various weight and thickness in order to suit intended use. These bags are also quite durable. They are water resistant and hence minimize the chances of bacteria and odor. Chemicals and solvents do not have any effect on them. These recyclable bags are produced in compliance with the FDA regulations and do not contain toxic materials. Even the dyes used for these bags are non-harmful.

In the present day, when the world is facing serious threats of pollution, scarcity of resources and global warming, the reusable, eco-friendly bags are the obvious choice for all sensible people. The time has come to bid adieu to the harmful plastic bags and look ahead to a cleaner, greener future.
