Those natural diamonds that are so expensive now have some serious competition in the form of man made diamonds. Now, don't get confused. Man made diamonds are not cubic zirconias. They are in fact diamonds, real ones that are created by men in a lab rather than by Mother Nature. Also, they are created significantly faster than the thousands of years it takes for a diamond to form in nature. Even the Gemological Institute of America confirms these man made diamonds are real diamonds that are just made in a lab.

How are They Made?

The fist question many have after learning that man made diamonds are in fact "real" diamonds is how these diamonds are made. It is really interesting to imagine that something that only nature could create is now being made in a lab in cities across America like Boston and Sarasota. Basically, the companies making man made diamonds use a machine about the size of a washing machine to recreate the natural environment in which diamonds are made. The difference is that these man made diamonds are ready in four days time whereas the natural variety takes thousands of years to form. However, the end result is a diamond.

How to Know the Difference

Most of the companies manufacturing man made diamonds believe in full disclosure and are not trying to pass their man made diamonds off as natural diamonds. Some of the companies are including a laser inscription on the diamonds so gemologist can easily distinguish between the two while others are placing just a little bit of nickel in the diamonds that does not change the appearance of the man made diamond but does make it easier to determine it's not natural.

What's the Difference in Price?

Another popular question about man made diamonds is the price difference. Fortunately, they are significantly cheaper than natural diamonds and allow for more bang for the buck. Many individuals will probably prefer natural diamonds for engagement rings for some time to come, although not everyone will. However, man made diamonds will more than likely find a great market for other pieces of diamond jewelry. In general, the overall savings will be approximately 30% although it depends on the type of man made stone you are buying the amount of savings you will see.

Where to Buy Man Made Diamonds

Man made diamonds are still a very new part of the diamond market. SO, you probably can't just walk into any jewelry store and find one. Although, you can search the Internet and find different retailers offering man made diamonds and can easily see the price difference and the specifications. If you don't mind buying a diamond online then buying a man made diamond this way is probably your best option.

Some people wonder what the new man made diamonds will mean for the diamond industry. Most folks aren't' worried as they believe there is enough room in the market for both natural and man made diamonds. There will be plenty of consumers who will only want a natural diamond and then other consumers who will want to save money or get a bigger stone for their budget that will prefer the man made stones. They haven't been on the market long enough to determine what the overall effect will be, but so far it appears the natural and man made diamonds will be able to coexist.
