What is snoring?

Millions of people today snore. Snoring is producing unpleasant sounds during sleeping. The root cause of snoring is vibration of tissues in the respiratory system, caused by obstruction in the air movement while sleeping. The noise can be a concern to the snorer and the snorer's partner, causing everyone to have trouble sleeping. But with a correct diagnosis, it may be possible to significantly reduce snoring, leading to better sleep and better overall health. If one is not able to cure the problem using over-the-counter products, perhaps surgery is an answer.

There are many developments in the area of products that can cure snoring. Some of them have advanced technologies such as pillows that sense when someone is snoring to help them sleep position. Others, such as throat and nasal sprays, are targeted to the exact area that may be related to snoring. But some of those products may not be completely effective, particularly with serious cases. In some people that snore, surgery may be the only option.

There are various surgical procedures that help put an end to snoring problems and other sleep-related. Some of the major and effective surgeries are listed below:

* Cautery-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (CAUP) is an effective method to cure snoring. This surgery uses a heated electrode or a wire to burn parts of the uvula. This method is very effective, less painful and easier than other surgical methods.

* Laser-assisted Uvulopalatoplasty is another surgical method to help people put an end to snoring problems. This treatment is less expensive compared with other surgeries. UPPP is laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (i.e. uses a laser). Under local anesthetic, parts of the uvula and soft palate are shortened with the help of the laser. The success rate is not perfect, however, with only 55% of patients showing satisfactory results.

* Cautery-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (CAUP) is also an effective method which helps stop snoring. This surgery uses a heated electrode or a wire to burn parts of the uvula. This method is very effective, less painful and quite easy compared to other surgical methods.
