The Kyocera Mita FS-1016mfp is one of the most well rounded multifunctional devices on the market today. While not excelling in any one particular area, it prints, copies, and scans with acceptable performance all around, making for the perfect device for those interested in something affordable that can still execute all the basics.

As the Kyocera Mita FS-1016mfp hits its fourth year on the market, it begins to show signs of age when compared to the smaller, faster units available today, but this often results in opportunities for bargain hunters to find a reliable product at a great value. With basic print speeds running at 17 pages per minute for letter sized paper and 15 pages per minute for legal size, the printer stands in the middle of the road as far as raw speed for a desktop unit. Its warm up time is reasonable, at 25 seconds, and a first page out time of only 11 seconds is actually very good.

First copy out time falls very slightly behind at 12 seconds, and other copy specifications are decent as well. Up to 99 copies can be made at once, continually, and imaging modes are selectable from text, photo, text / photo, and automatic, which adds a degree of user control to this otherwise simplistic unit. Other copy features include electronic sorting, 2 in 1, and 4 in 1, which helps users save paper by reducing four scanned images in size enough to fit onto a single page. Scan once, print many is an option as well for making multiple copies.

One of the most outstanding features of the Kyocera Mita FS-1016mfp is the automatic document processor which has a large 50 sheet capacity. It also accepts a variety of paper sizes and weights ranging from 4.5 in. x 5.5 in. to standard legal size, and 16 lb. to 28 lb. bond. It runs at a speed of up to 14.2 letter size originals per minute which can be great when making multiple copies or scans.

While copying and printing are possible only in black and white, as the Kyocera Mita FS-1016mfp is strictly a monochrome laser printer, scanning can be done in full color, and in a huge range of selectable resolutions. Scan speeds run slightly sluggishly, at up to 5 pages per minute in monochrome and up to 4.2 pages per minute in full color, but up to 1200 dots per inch resolution can be achieved optically. Unfortunately, print resolution falls behind at only 600 x 600 dots per inch.

Scans can be output to various formats including BMP, TIFF, JPEG, and PDF, and can be sent either to a connected PC or directly to an e mail. With other included features such as 32 MBs of RAM and a control panel that assists in making adjustments such as copy zooming in 1% increments, the Kyocera Mita FS-1016mfp remains firmly in the desktop MFC category. If one could obtain one of these units for a bargain price, it would make a great purchase.
