Ike Inches East Up the Texas Coast
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) just release their Wednesday evening, 7pm (CST) advisory. I can't help but remember and make comparisons to Hurricane Rita. Rita was originally scheduled to come ashore around Port Lavaca as well but in the last thirty six hours, she kept sliding up the coast and came ashore near the Texas-Louisiana border.
NHC advisory # 39 is little changed; however, the GFDL model hs inched to slightly East of Galveston now.
The current chances of hurricane force winds for Houston is 30%,but with the current high pressure system moving off to the East, where Ike comes ashore is no more important than how fast he bends Eastward. If the high pressure moves faster (before landfall), then 50 miles in (can you say Northwest Houston) gets some of the strongest winds as oppossed to Ike heading due North after landfall.
Meanwhile, on the current NHC track, Matagorda County has issued a mandatory evacuation for areas south of Highway 35 and the Blessing area and has recommended a voluntary evacuation for residents north of Highway 35 and in Bay City and Van Vleck for people living in low-lying areas and manufactured homes not properly tied down.
Overall, in the last twenty four hours, Ike shifted 50 miles closer to Galveston on Wednesday, prompting city officials to make mandatory what had been a voluntary evacuation of more than 10,000 residents on the low-lying western end of the island. City Manager Steve LeBlanc said a 9-foot to 11-foot tidal surge could hit Galveston Island.
Come Thursday, expect announcement on school closings, football game cancellations, and the like. Right now, there is no recommendations on Houston proper except, stay tuned, and make sure
