Learn French In Your Car

Just how far can you go in learning french while you are in your car ? As for many things, as far as you want. Just as long as you don't get too excited about "cracking the code" at the same time as you are driving.

Let's start with the basics. You have decided that you are finally going to speak french correctly. You are also wondering how you can put to good use the time that you spend in your car, commuting, driving to meetings, going on vacation, etc.

So how do you put the two things together for practical reality ?

Here are a few pointers.

First of all, your concentration. Not only on learning french, but also on your driving. The requirement to drive "with due care and attention" exists everywhere. If learning french (or anything else) in the car has any negative effect on your standard of driving, then you may want to let someone else drive while you learn.

Secondly, how you learn. Audio tapes, CDs and Podcast files can all help. Just remember that in the car, you may not always be in a position to hit the "pause" button, if the information comes at you too fast. Because the real value of these audio media is when you repeat the information out loud and compare with what they just told you. That's when it gets recorded in your brain and the real learning happens.

It's a case where less may in fact be more. You'll need relatively generous blanks in between the words spoken at you, in order to have the time to organise your thoughts and repeat back out loud. Audio information that was too dense would finish up by just washing over you, rather than sinking in.

And finally, the company you keep when you are in your car. Not everybody may share your burning ambition to speak french like Nicolas Sarkozy. On the other hand, if family or friends are as enthusiastic as you are, it may turn into a shared activity and good fun.

With the added advantage of having another person available to hit the "pause" button while you negotiate that tricky parking manoeuvre.
