When you are starting a website one of main things you should think about is SEO keyword selection. Keywords are what the search engines use to rank your pages and put them in the correct category. If you website is about fishing than your keywords may include bass fishing, fishing, deep sea fishing or whatever your site will focus on.

Most search engine optimization "gurus" will tell you it is a good idea to find as many keywords as you can. They will tell you to go to several of the online tools and software to identify the top keywords. When you are just getting started with your website this may sound like a great idea, but typically this is not the best strategy.

What is the job of search engines? A search engines job is go out to the web and find the specific search term that a web surfer added into the search box. When a page that closely matches a phrase or word is searched by a surfer, than it will rank well with the search engines. Search engines strive to be as accurate as possible so that the person searching will not move to another search engine.

Search engines use algorithms, which is a mathematical program that calculates if the web page matches the term the surfer typed in. If a particular page has many search terms than the spiders will be confused as to what the page is really about. If you have a lot of keywords on a particular page the chances of your page getting ranked well will suffer.

If you use a particular keyword such as bass fishing on one page several times than the spiders will know that your page is focusing on bass fishing and your rank will increase. Search engine technology is all about finding the most relevant keyword that the surfer is looking for. You can make is easy or difficult for the spiders it is up to you.

If you are an internet marketer and you want to drive traffic by ranking high on the search engines your best bet is to focus all of your pages on a particular keyword or keyword phrase. Some of the areas you want to focus the keyword on is in the body of the page, meta tags, headings, and sub-headings. Try to avoid using several keywords on each page and let the spiders know without a doubt what your website is focused on.

If you want your traffic to increase than the best advice is to focus on one particular keyword or phrase for each page.

If you plan on driving traffic through pay per clicks than you should try to use a small amount of keywords because you will get much more targeted traffic and you will not waste money on people who click through only to find out that your website is not what they are looking for and click away.

Be more specific about what you are targeting and your traffic will go up and you will not have to worry about paying to get traffic to your site.
