A Search Engine is designed to locate specified information on the World Wide Web. Search engines are confronted with millions of web pages and it becomes difficult to select the best possible match. Each search engine develops a set of rules known as algorithms to set the order of rankings. Once the list is prepared, the most relevant pages are indexed. Typically a search engine functions by sending out spiders to bring back as many relevant documents as possible. In this article let us discuss how spiders help search engines to focus on the most significant web pages that the visitors are looking for.

Spiders are small programs that follow the links from page to page and create key search words that assist the online viewers to find appropriate pages they are looking for. Different approaches of different search engines attempt to make the spiders operate fast and more proficiently. The spiders usually keep a track of the keywords in the title, sub headings, links and other positions of relative importance. In this manner, the spiders begin to travel and spread out across the most widely used areas of the websites. The spiders put themselves in the user's shoes and deliver the most significant, suitable and information rich sites that delight the viewers.

How to Identify Spiders:

Search engine spider is automated software used to locate and gather information from different relevant web pages. It is important to keep in mind the spiders while designing and optimizing a site. But the question is how will you identify a spider? Spiders of major search engines can be identified from their host names. For e.g. Netscape identifies itself as Mozilla, Alta Vista as Scooter and HotBot spider as Slurp. You can get a list of host and agent names for the major search engines by sending a request for the robot.txt file. The list generated will contain files that are mostly spider, robot or agents.

How do Spiders Read a Website:

The journey of a spider begins with a list of URL that have been stored previously. As the journey continues, new pages are added to the database and then the program filters billions of pages recorded and creates an index that contains the best matched web pages it believes is relevant. So, when a query is generated for particular information, the search engine analysis the index and calculates the order or ranking of the pages based on further algorithmic factors. This is considered as the search engine result page or even the search history.
