The latest version of windows was designed with security in mind and automatically comes packaged with built in spyware protection that is meant to protect vista users from online threats. But this doesn't appear to be the case.

Way back in 2004 Microsoft bought out GIANT and acquired their anti spyware program as part of the acquisition. After a lot of tweaking they released windows anti spyware which was then upgraded to windows defender. It's this that is in built as spyware protection for vista users.

However it seems that the innovative idea doesn't really pan out in practice and vista users still have problems with spyware. In some cases the integrated spyware protection for vista doesn't even register a problem. That, of course, is a problem.

Most of the major security and anti spyware companies and providers supply compatible spyware protection software that is compatible for vista. From a security point of view it's probably better to have an independent software program as opposed to an in built one. It just seems more secure.

In its original form as windows anti spyware its effectiveness was debatable and the upgraded and renamed defender didn't fare much better. Whether the original anti spyware program it was based on was as good some experts believe is also open to question. Whatever the case may be it does appear that insufficient spyware protection is available for vista users that only rely on the in built features.

As a consequence of this there are a lot of queries and questions about compatible spyware protection that will run effectively for windows vista. In most cases what worked for XP will also work for vista just as effectively. The only requirement would be to download and install the compatible vista software.

Most providers have made this very easy and a number of the top companies have spyware protection software that will run effectively for both XP and vista. So you only need to download and install one piece of software no matter which version you are running.
