New US Ambassador for Indonesia Named
Hume, 59, entered the State Department in 1970 after studying at Princeton University and gaining a law degree at American University.
He is currently serving as US ambassador to the Sudan, a post he took up only last year. He has also served as ambassador to Algeria (1997-2000) and South Africa (2001-4).
Between his terms in South Africa and the Sudan, he served as deputy inspector general at the State Department. Other postings include terms in Damascus, Beirut and at the UN.
He is the author of a number of books, The United Nations, Iran and Iraq: How Peacemaking Changed (1994), Ending Mozambique's War (1994) and Mission to Algiers: Diplomacy by Engagement (2006).
