Be A Safer Driver By Not Using Your Cell Phone in the Car Instead Try A Hands Free Phone
One answer is to use a kit that has a speaker attached to it so that you do not have to hold the phone when you are using it. This a great way to make sure that you can keep both hands on the wheel but there are other reasons for not using your phone in the car.
Of course if you are not actually holding the phone then it should be a lot safer and it does seem that it is a much better idea than just holding the phone while you are driving. But it is not just the fact of whether you are actually holding the phone that is the real issue. The main thing is whether using the phone distracts you or not. If you are, then it is not a good idea to use it. But if you think that you concentrate just as well then it might not be an issue.
It sound as though talking to a hands free cell phone would be no more dangerous than talking to a passenger that with you in the car. But it is not the same. The passenger in the car is on the journey with you and will react to the road the same way that you will. If you have to do something they will automatically pause the conversation so that you are able to concentrate on what you are doing.
But if you are talking on your cell phone then the person on the other end will not know that anything is happening and will just not pause so that you can see what you are doing and your concentration will not automatically switch from one to the other. It is possible that some of your concentration will stay on the person that is still talking rather than on the road.
So if you need to make or answer a call when you are driving it is a good idea to pull over. There is rarely a situation that cannot wait for a few minutes while you find somewhere to park and it will make your driving a lot safer as well.
