Since the beginning of bicycles, people have used these two wheeled machines to get from one place to another. Commuting by bicycle to school, to work or to run errands have infinite benefits.

In this article I will be discussing two major benefits of bicycle commuting, saving money and saving your health.

Many people that first consider commuting by bicycle to work often think about the savings they will see in their check book. Typically, commuting can help people save hundreds and even thousands of dollars over the costs of owning a car or taking public transportation.

Most would be commuters are not too sure on what kind of bicycle to purchase. Personally I would recommend a flat bar road bike. These types of road bikes offer the speed and agility of a fast road bike, but with the comfort of a mountain bike.

A Utah based company called Fezzari Bicycles offers a flat bar road bike called the Speedster at an exceptional value. The Speedster retails less than $500 yet it offers a far range of quality parts that competitors would offer on an $800 bicycle. These parts range from top names like Shimano, RPM and Maxxis.

A purchase of a $500 bicycle may force would-be commuters to rethink about the benefits of bicycle commuting. One thing to consider is that a bicycle isn't a mere purchase, but it is an investment that will save that person hundreds to thousands of dollars in the course of a year. Not only that, this investment will also help the commuter's overall health.

This brings us to the next benefit, health. Riding a bicycle has obvious positive effects on a person. But riding it everyday to and from work can dramatically change a person's whole life.

In a recent article on a popular bicycle commuter website, author, Priscilla Policar mentions just a few of the health benefits she has experienced from riding her bicycle to work; "The ride really wakes me up so I don't need that cup of coffee in the morning anymore. The exercise has REALLY helped. Anyone ever complained about rock hard calves???"

An additional benefit to riding your bike to and from work is that it makes you calm, stress free. Not only do you get to your destination feeling refreshed, but you're more than capable of being able to handle tasks that lay ahead of you.

In general exercise has been known to fight depression by activating neurotransmitters in the brain. These neurotransmitters are known as Serotonin and nor epinephrine. When a person doesn't exercise, these neurotransmitters may not be functioning properly. Riding a bicycle can definitely aid in making sure they are in working order. Commuting by bicycle can also stimulate production of Endorphins. These are other neurotransmitters that allow a person to experience well-being, natural "high", pain relief and even help a person relax.

In conclusion there are numerous reason why bicycle commuting is beneficial. However, this article focused on two major benefits, money and health. We discussed that a small investment for a high quality bicycle as such of those offered by Fezzari Bicycles can save a person hundreds to thousands of dollars in a course of a year.

We also delved into the health benefits of bicycling commuting. Endorphins, Serotonin and other neurotransmitters will start to function properly once exercise is introduced. These neurotransmitters have been known to make a person feel more balanced and into a state of well-being.
