Let's face it, no matter how hard you try to justify it pets were meant to be outdoors. Being confined to a house is not natural for any pet, and for those owners wishing to give their pets easy access to the outdoors should consider adding a pet door. A pet door will give your animal the freedom it craves to go outside whenever it wants; this is especially true for those that have outdoor cats. Cat owners know - cats LOVE to be outside. Most cat owners, however, do not love getting up to let their cat out and again to let their cat in. A magnetic cat door is the solution.

Magnetic pet doors come in a wide variety of sizes, styles, and types. No longer are you limited to the basic "hole and flap" design; now you can even have pet doors that automatically open for you! These "automatic pet doors", as they are known, are designed to open and close when a pet approaches. This usually happens when a key, attached to the animals collar, comes within close proximity to the sensor that is attached to the door. One cost-effective design uses magnets to work, and these are known as magnetic pet doors.

Magnetic cat doors work by having a small magnet inside one key on your cat's collar, and another at the sensor unit usually located at the base of the door. Magnetic doggie doors are usually best for cats - why aren't they recommended for dogs, you ask? Cats have a tendency to prowl very low to the ground when they want to exit, thus the key is low to the ground and closer to the sensor. Dogs will usually not walk around with their collar this low to the ground, and since the key has to be very close to the sensor it will often not open for a dog. Thus, magnetic pet doors are not recommended for dogs.

Since the technology used in magnetic dog doors isn't ground breaking, they usually represent the cheapest bunch of doggie doors, much cheaper than their RFID and infrared brethren. Magnetic doors can be had for as little as $50, with higher end models usually less than $150. When you look at the benefits of having an automatic pet door, the price seems trivial: not being woken up at 3am to let your cat out is priceless.
