Environment, How can you make a difference to the environment?
Concerns over the environment have been steadily increasing for some time now. And, as more people recognise the benefits of going green, there has been a shift in the way many approach life. From recycling initiatives and pledges to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, to companies adopting environmental policies, the whole world seems to be acknowledging the need for a greener planet.
As an individual, though, it can sometimes be hard to know where to start. Indeed, how easy is it to actually adopt a greener approach and what are the benefits of doing so?
Take cars, for instance. Many people use theirs on a daily basis, in order to get to work, take the children to school or to ferry the weekly shopping home. But, with millions of vehicles on the roads, huge amounts of harmful CO2 and carbon monoxide emissions are spewed into the atmosphere everyday. Not only is this pollution harmful for the environment, but it can also negatively affect humans.
However, the UK government has introduced some initiatives to encourage people to go greener with their cars. Therefore, by either downsizing your car, or opting for a more fuel-efficient model, you can easily make a difference to the environment, as well as save yourself some cash!
Firstly, it is important to be aware of the type of car you have, in order to ascertain its ‘greenness'. Generally speaking, the more fuel-efficient the car is, the more environmentally-friendly it is. Fuel efficiency is related to the vehicle's overall mass, but this doesn't necessarily mean you have to opt for a tiny car to be green.
Indeed, it is worth searching around as many manufacturers are factoring environmental concerns into their designs, and as such, there is a wide variety of fuel-efficient cars out there, which are not small or under-powered.
Alternatively, you can choose to invest in a car that does not use conventional fuels. These types of vehicles - LPG, natural gas, battery-electric and hybrid-electric - are significantly better for the environment and offer up a number of benefits.
For example, the cost of road tax is either significantly reduced or removed altogether, dependent on the type of fuel/power you use, as well as the number of CO2 emissions released. This is also true for traditional cars. Fuel tax is another area you can save money on, as is congestion charges.
And, if you have a greener car, you can secure yourself a cheaper car insurance deal. In fact, it is possible to find deals which offer specific discounts and packages to those with more environmentally-friendly vehicles. It is, therefore, worth looking around for suitable car insurance quotes, in order to ensure you get the best price possible.
Overall, there is a lot to gain by going greener with your car. So, why not see what you can do to make the world that little bit greener today?
