People use scents and fragrances in many ways to create a pleasant odor. Because of the popularity of perfume among people, it is one of the favorite items usually given as a gift for special occasions or even for no occasion at all. Perfume may not be that cheap but it can definitely put a big smile to anyone's face who receives it as a present.

When you are actually buying perfume for a friend, lover, or a relative you need to have at least some idea of what exactly you are looking for. You have to consider the person's character and individuality. Knowing also his and her style and taste would help you select something that he or she would definitely like. Your choice should also reflect your relationship with the person. I don't believe that the type of perfume that you would be giving your mother or grandmother would also be the same kind that you will be giving a girlfriend.

You can actually select from six different categories of scents. The most popular and abundant kind in the market would be the floral scents. Most women like the smell of flowers on their skin. Another type of scent would be those containing extracts from lime, lemons, tangerine and mandarin. Citrus scents radiate a smell that is fresh and uplifting. Cyprus fragrances give off that earthy scent usually associated with pine. Oriental scents give off a feeling of warmth and is a mix of spices. Green fragrances are blends of leaves and herbs that exude a sporty feel most suited for day time wear. The last category which is the Fougere is a mix of fresh herbs and mossy ferns giving off a woody or herbaceous scent.

Your choice of scent should also be in parallel with the season. Spring calls for refreshing scents while summer may call for very cool fragrances. For winter, warm and intimate scents would be appropriate while autumn calls for light scents. Perfume for day wear is different from perfume for a night out.

You also need to consider how strong you want the perfume to be. You have eau de cologne which basically contains only 2-3% aromatic compounds, followed by eau de toilette with 5-20% aromatic compounds and eau de perfume with 10-30% aromatic compounds. The more aromatic compounds the perfume contains the longer it will last and the more expensive.

With all these in mind, you are well on your way to giving that perfect fragrance that will definitely brighten someone's day.
