So you have decided to take the family to Orlando for your next vacation. You have done your homework, planned every waking minute and booked your trip far in advance. The big week comes and halfway through the 15 hour days at the theme parks you are too exhausted to get out of bed. Time and time again we have customers that book a week long vacation and want to go to every theme park, water park and dinner show. I understand that they want to get their money's worth, but this is supposed to be a vacation. While a healthy dose of the theme parks is certainly recommended, a little relaxation will go along way too.

Some of the countries best beaches are less than two hours from Orlando. My favorite is Playalinda beach in the Canaveral National Seashore. This area is 24 miles of unspoiled beach located on the east coast or Atlantic side. While there are restrooms, bring everything else you need with you because there are no stores. Also, do not forget the bug spray as Playalinda beach is next to the mosquito lagoon and they do not call it mosquito lagoon for nothing. The current fee is $3 per person and free for under age 16. If your lucky, you might even get a glimpse of the space shuttle on the launch pad. Want to see a wild alligator or a bald eagle? Try the Black Point wildlife drive in the Merritt Island national wildlife refuge. This is a self guided 7 mile ride through marshes and estuaries. How about a manatee? There is a manatee viewing platform located on the haulover canal. These are both located within ten minutes of Playalinda beach, just follow the signs. Best of all, they are free. More information can be found at the US Fish and Wildlife service website and the Canaveral National Seashore website

On the west coast or Gulf side is Fort De Soto Park in Pinellas county. Roughly two hours from the Disney area, but well worth the drive. The beach was named in the top ten beaches of 2005 and the park offers many amenities such as concessions, shelters, grills, fishing piers, restrooms, showers and playgrounds. Incredibly, there is NO fee to enter this park. More information can be found at The Pinellas County website.

Playalinda beach and Fort De Soto park are both highly recommended places to take a vacation from your vacation. So, during your next Orlando vacation, relax and recharge yourself and visit one of our spectacular beaches. Remember, you do not have to do everything in one vacation, you can always come back again next year.
